The Siemens Competition

Just recently I became familiar with a competition that high school students, throughout the United States, can participate in for the chance to win scholarship amounts ranging from $1,000 to $100,000.  Participating students would have to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior in high school.

The competition is The Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.  I became familiar with it because they recently announced their 2015 winners.  In my opinion, this competition provides an awesome opportunity for any high school student who does not mind challenging themselves and is willing to put forth the hard work necessary to research and present a project related to science or math.

The Siemens Foundation started this competition in 1999 as a means of showing their commitment toward education in the U.S.  Each year the foundation provides approximately $600,000 in scholarship money to students who take part in this competition.

Students may enter the competition as an individual applicant or as a team.  An individual applicant must be a high school senior but team applicants can be made up of high school freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Applicants, whether individual or team, are required to submit an 18 page research report on a subject related to science, math or technology.  The reports are evaluated to determine if students will make it as a Regional Finalist.  Students, who do become Regional Finalist, are required to participate in a poster and oral presentation before a panel of experts in the science and math professions.

Regional Finalists are entered for the $1,000 to $3,000 scholarship consideration.  Those who become National Finalists are entered for the $10,000 to $100,000 scholarship consideration.

The 2015 competition has been completed and the winners announced.  However, I wanted to bring The Siemens Competition to the attention of students and their parents so they can began looking at the possibility for the 2016 competition.  The competition is open to all U.S. high school students.  It does not matter who you are, what your background is, where you live, or what high school you attend.  If you feel you have what it takes to compete, then I am hoping that this information will spark that interest and encourage you to Go For IT.  Remember,  No One Can Put Any Limits On You Except You.

The application deadline for the 2015 year was September 30th.  Most likely the 2016 application will be around the same time period.  Do some research for yourself to determine what kind of projects won in years past, what the application process is, and what the deadline will be for the 2016 year.  You can do that by going to Siemens Competition.
