It is that time of the year again, whereas, if students are not thinking about preparing for college in the upcoming school year, they should be. This would include identifying possible resources that can be used to pay for education beyond high school. One of those sources that all students should be considering is, of course, federal financial aid. Most experts agree that even if a student feel they will not qualify for federal aid, it is still wise to apply as some private scholarship sources have a prerequisite that to be considered students must have completed the Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA).
Remember that the application date that students can began to submit their FAFSA for the 2019-2020 year starts October 1, 2018. During that application process, parents and students will be using information from their tax filing for 2017.
In this post, I do not plan to go into a description of the various federal financial aid sources you can be considered for as a result of filling out a FAFSA application as those have been covered extensively in previous post which you can access by clicking on various posts below. I will just indicate that those sources include the Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant, Irag and Afghanistan Service Grant (ISAG), Direct Subsidized Loan, Direct Unsubsidized Loan, Perkins Loan, Direct Plus Loan, and Federal Work Study.

In this post I wanted to outline various private scholarships sources students may want to consider applying for. Some of those scholarships are as follow.
Scholarships
1. Coca-Cola Scholars Program
Award: $20,000 Deadline: October 31, 2018
This scholarship is open for current high school senior students attending school in the United States (or select Dept. of Defense schools) who will graduate during the 2018-2019 academic school year

2. Gen & Kelly Tanabe Scholarship
Award: $1,000 Deadline: December 31, 2018
Applicant can be a 9th – 12th grade high school student , college or graduate student who is a legal U.S. citizen and is currently in school or planning to start school within the next 12 months.

3. AXA Achievement Scholarship
Award: $2,500 Deadline: December 14, 2018
Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident who is currently a high school senior and planning to enroll full-time in an accredited college or university following graduation. Applicants must show ambition and drive which would be evident by their outstanding achievement in school, community, or workplace activities.

4. The Coolidge Scholarship
Award: Full Tuition Deadline: January 24, 2019
This is a presidential scholarship that covers a student full tuition, room, board, and expenses for 4 years of undergraduate school. Students apply for the Coolidge Scholarship during their junior year of high school. Students are eligible to apply for this scholarship regardless of their background or what field of study they plan to pursue.
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen planning on enrolling full-time in an accredited U.S. college or university. Selection of recipients are based on academic excellence, interest in public policy and an appreciation for Coolidge’s values and demonstrated humility and leadership.

5. John F. Kennedy Profile In Courage Essay Contest
Award: $20,000 Deadline: January 18, 2019
Applicants must be in grades 9 through 12 enrolled in a public or private high school or be home schooled. Applicant must write an essay about the political courage of a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1966.

6. U.S. Bank Scholarship Program
Award: $20,000 Deadline: October 27, 2018
Applicant must be a high school senior who plan to attend college or is a current freshman, sophomore or junior attending full-time at an accredited 2 or 4 year college. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

7. Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest
Award: $25,000 Deadline: January 15, 2019
Applicant must be high school senior, college undergraduate or college graduate student. Applicant must submit an 800-1000 word essay which demonstrates their understanding of Ayn Rand’s novel “Atlas Shrugged”.

8. Voice of Democracy Scholarship
Award: $30,000 Deadline: October 31, 2018
Applicant must be in grades 9 thru 12 and enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or be home schooled in the United States or it’s territories. Applicant will be required to write and record a 3 to 5 minute essay on the theme “Why My Vote Matters”.

9. G2 Overachievers Student Grant
Award: $12,500 Deadline: December 31, 2018
This is open to middle and high school students who are between the ages of 13 and 19. Students must be making a difference in other people lives and affecting the lives of others outside of their classroom. Applicants (or others nominating someone for this award) must submit a 1,000 to 2,500 handwritten essay expressing how they (or the nominated student) is working outside the classroom to benefit others.

10. United States Senate Youth Program
Award: $10,000 Deadline: December 1, 2018
Two students will be selected from each state, the District of Columbia and the department of the Defense Education Activity. It is opened to junior and senior high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in public service. Each selected student will spend a week in Washington DC experiencing their national government in action. All expenses are paid by the Hearst Foundation along with a $10,000 college scholarship for their undergraduate studies.

11. Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway Contest
Award: Up to $100,000 Deadline: October 17, 2018
Applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 24 and they must create a video briefly explaining their academic and professional goals and how they plan to change the world.

12. Burger King Scholars Award
Award: $1,000 – $50,000 Deadline: December 15, 2018
Applicants should be high school seniors who are residents of the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico. Winners are selected based on grade point average (minimum of 2.5), work experience, extra curricular activities and community service.

13. Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award
Award: $10,000 Deadline: January 7, 2019
This award is available to exceptional young musicians, ages 8 to 18, who demonstrate financial need.

14. Horatio Alger Scholarship Award
Award: $25,000 Deadline: October 25, 2018
This is open to high school seniors in the United States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico who plan to enter a college in the U.S. no later than the fall following their high school graduation. This award is particularly geared toward students who have overcome great obstacles in their lives and exhibit determination, integrity and perseverance.

15. Jackie Robinson’s Foundation Scholarship
Award: $30,000 over 4 years Deadline: February 1, 2019
Applicant must be identified as a minority student. This is a need based scholarship where students are selected based on their leadership potential and their dedication to community service.

16. Engebretson Foundation Scholarship
Award: $5,000 per semester Deadline: March 1, 2019
This is a need based scholarship that is awarded to high school seniors recognizing them for their academic achievements and leadership ability.

17. Ron Brown Scholars
Award: $10,000 per year Deadline: January 9, 2019
This is open to Black/African American high school juniors and seniors. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, excel academically, exhibit leadership ability, and engage in community service activity.

18. Davidson Fellows Scholarship
Award: $10,000 – $50,000 Deadline: February 13, 2019
Applicant must be age 18 years or under and must complete a significant piece of work in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, literature, music, or philosophy.

19. Foot Locker Scholar Athletes
Award: $20,000 Deadline: December 14, 2018
This is a scholarship that award student athletes who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and strong leadership skills in sports, in their school or in their community. Applicants must be entering college as a freshman in the Fall of 2019, be currently involved in high school, intramural or community based sports. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

20. Dell Scholars
Award: $20,000 Deadline: December 1, 2018
This award recognizes low-income highly motivated students who demonstrate the drive to succeed despite the personal obstacles they’ve had to overcome. Applicants must show financial need and must plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the fall following their high school graduation. Applicants must also have a minimum GPA of 2.4 and be eligible to receive the federal Pell Grant in their first year of college.

21. Regeneron Science Talent Search
Award: $2,000 – $250,000 Deadline: November 14, 2018
The Regeneron Science Talent Search was previously known as the Intel Science Talent Search. It is a prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. During this competition, students will enter their scientific research projects to be judged by nationally recognized scientist for an opportunity to win awards up to $250,000.
