In this issue, as well as the next, our purpose is to highlight some of the colleges and universities in the United States. When students are considering what school they should choose to pursue their educational goals beyond high school, the vast array of institutions available can be somewhat overwhelming for the majority of us. There are hundreds of college and universities to choose from and, via our posts, we will not be able to cover all of them, but it is our hope that the information we do provide give parents and students some ideal as to available options.
For this issue, we will begin by providing information on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). HBCUs came about as a result of the Morrill Act of 1890 which required that states, specifically southern states, who wanted to utilize land grant funds were also required to create institutions to educated black students if they denied them entry to universities/colleges where whites students were being educated. As a result, many southern states created land grant institutions for the purpose of educating black students. Via Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965, Congress officially defined HBCUs as “a schools of higher learning that was accredited and established before 1964 and whose principal mission was the education of African Americans”.
The following list of HBCUs have been in existence for many years and have produced a significant amount of educated and very successful African Americans. Even today, HBCUs continue the mission of providing an environment for African American students that educationally stimulating and culturally enriching. However, on any HBCU campus today you will see that all students, regardless of race or background, are welcome and are provided with a rich educational experience that will prepare them for future.
